**Honoree Biography: Joe Smitherman**

Joseph Smitherman ---

played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement in Selma, Alabama, during the years 1964–1965. As a 16-year-old student at RB Hudson High School, he became a dedicated foot soldier in the fight for racial equality.

One morning on his way to school, he encountered freedom fighters stationed at the Freedom House, who posed a life-changing question: "Do you want to be free?" His response, along with that of his classmates, was a resounding yes. Later that evening, he and about ten others returned to the Freedom House, where they met notable civil rights leaders, including John Love, Hosea Williams, Lewis, Lafayette, and TC Vision. These leaders mentored and prepared them for the disciplined act of marching—a crucial tactic in the movement.

Under the guidance of seasoned activists, Smitherman and his peers took to the streets, joining the historic marches that helped pave the way for voting rights and social justice in America. His contributions as a young marcher reflect the courage and determination that defined the struggle for freedom.

Today, he is honored as a key figure in the movement, recognized for his dedication to civil rights and his unwavering commitment to justice. His story serves as a reminder of the power of youth activism and the enduring impact of those who stood for equality.
